When you write a blistering industry insider...

...that is also a killer thriller, the fine hairs on the backs of editor's necks the globe over rise up like the hackles on a horny hen. And that's a good thing. Because remember The Devil Wears Prada? It was as much an industry insider as the novel I just wrote. People recognized themselves.

But of course, the plot is pure thriller, pure sweat-beading-on-the-brow intense, and chuck full of some of the crazy publishing shit I've witnessed and experienced over a 20 year period.

It's all Zandri, with a twist.

Parties at the Gramercy Park Hotel in a suite filled with agents and editors doing some mega weed and Bolivian marching powder. Sweaty sexy affairs with my marketing babe. Drugs (of course). Waking up on the floor of a Brooklyn apartment rented by my editor after I apparently nearly peed in his guitar case, my wallet missing, our having been arrested the night before on the Williamsburg Bridge (and let go even after a double barrelled shotgun was discovered). Making hundreds of thousands, losing hundreds of thousands, selling empty beer cans to buy groceries, the new indie invasion, selling hundreds of thousands of books not in years but months, the New York Times, USA Today, The Thriller Award...That's just what comes to mind.

But this one is also very reminiscent of Mailer, An American Dream.

There's the rich society girl who ditched me when things were bad and came back to me when things were once more hot as hell. And there's the dude she really loved. There's lunacy, a man who sleepwalks and ends up in another city altogether after going to sleep in his bed. There's a hot punk rock chick with red hair and combat boots who becomes an ally. There's bad cops. There's fights with New York Times reporters outside the Mysterious Bookshop (Hi Otto!) There's psycho wards, and murder, and jealously, and suicide and more than anything else, there is the overwhelming desire to be the most revered author in New York City no matter who fucking dies.

Welcome to the world of modern publishing...

That's the craziness that's my new novel, DEADLY IS THE NIGHT and that's the one book I wrote not from the heart but from deep down in a soul darkened and humored by 20 years of NYC publishing experience. It's only been out with the eds for 2.5 weeks and already we have one super offer...

The Devil Wears Prada meets Mailer's An American Dream...In some ways, I've succeeded at that kind of hot novel.

Stay tuned...
